Update 5: Christmas 2020

Dear Friends,

Nicholle and I will be thinking of ye here as we spend a quiet Christmas together. We were very lucky to be able to spend last Christmas in Galway and catch up with some friends and family there, so I’ve posted some pics of those happier times below.

We are both doing well, and both of us are busy and engaged with our work, but we also enjoy our quiet downtime together in our lovely home. Some pics of our life here below and some notes at the end from some of the things I have been working on.

Happy Christmas and I hope we might meet again soon for a proper catch up.

COVID Times: “Ninja” Nicholle heading to work
I shaved my head at the start of COVID thinking I wouldn’t be seeing anyone. Got a new job two weeks later and turned up to early meetings as on the left – now back to looking like the chap on the right
This is where I spend my days. The fancy monitors belong to my university lab but my supervisor was kind enough to let me bring them home so I have a great setup. Desktop is a refurbished Dell I got for a song but works great!
We bought a car earlier in the year so now I can taxi Nicholle to/from work so we can escape to nature sometimes. I was able to just swap my Irish license for a Canadian one but Nicholle has to jump through some hoops to get her Chinese license transferred – she passed her knowledge test last week so hopefully she’ll be on the road fairly soon after the driving test backlog clears.
The car is a Hyundai Santa Fe – we call her Tina (Tina Fey)
Earlier in the year we went gallivanting to Whiterock, Squamish, and to some of the other places we’ve been hearing about since we got here.
“The Chief” – Squamish
We still live right by Pacific Spirit Regional Park and try to get in there for walks fairly regularly.

We’ve enjoyed lots of BBQs over the summer. Mostly just the two of us but this one was with my supervisor Jillianne and her husband Nick.
We really miss eating lamb so Chef Nicholle regularly does lamb BBQ Xinjiang stlye
Vegetables too!

I continue to enjoy my studies and have made progress in several areas. Some links / stories here:
