https://vancouversun.com/news/vancouver-high-school-teacher-suspended-after-pup-fetish-adult-content-online

  • A Vancouver high school teacher has been suspended after his pup fetish identity and a messaging channel where he shares pornographic content were discovered online, raising questions about where the line lies between teachers’ personal lives and professional expectations.

“I’m not doing anything illegal, I’m not doing anything that is hurting anyone, or that interferes with my job — the issue is their stigma, their bias,” said Daniel Gore.

  • Gore said the issue appears to have begun after a student in his class saw the name ‘Tank’ on his computer screen and later found public pornographic content linked to that identity.
  • “From what I’ve been told by the union, the main issue is that there is sexual content featuring me online that students could potentially access,” he told Postmedia. “If they ask me to take down the (pornographic) part of my content, I’m willing to do so — because honestly, that’s not the part of my life that matters most to me.”

https://www.nsnews.com/local-news/former-lynn-valley-teacher-guilty-of-indecent-assaults-on-grade-6-boys-10475885

  • The cases date back to the 1970s and 80s
  • In the winter of 1982, several of the boys confided in a friend’s parent what had happened. That parent reported it to Upper Lynn Valley Elementary’s principal who called Moore to his office. Moore submitted his resignation that day, the court heard.
    • The principal never reported the matter to police, he testified, because it was the school district’s responsibility.
  • There was an RCMP investigation into Moore in 1988, though it never resulted in charges
  • A date has yet to be set for Moore to be sentenced.

Reminiscent of how the Catholic Church “handled” such crimes and of the disgraceful handling of BC teacher Robert Robertso’s case:

  • Employed by Richmond School Board when first accused of having sexual contact with three female students 15 and 16 years old between 1974 and 1976.
    • He resigned from his job and the investigation stalled.
  • Employed by the Vancouver School Board from 1976 to 2006, when he was investigated for another misconduct allegation.
    • He resigned before he could be dismissed

Still holding a valid teaching certificate, he moved to China.

https://www.theguardian.com/society/2025/feb/02/soft-spaces-out-stick-fighting-in-dutch-call-for-the-return-of-risky-play

  • A new policy from the D66 liberal democrats proposes giving all children in the Dutch capital access to outdoor play areas to climb, play with water and fire, sword-fight with sticks, build with hammers, rope or knives, wrestle and fall. “Rufty-tufty playing means that children might get a bump or a cut,” according to the policy – but it’s an acceptable risk, they say.

“The inspiration, and it really is a huge problem, is that children are hardly moving,” said Rob Hofland, head of the local D66 and proud uncle of tree-climbing children. “All kinds of problems stem from just sitting behind a screen. We see increasing numbers of burnouts and we are learning ever more about how unhealthy it is that the Dutch – the sitting champions of Europe – are so sedentary. Things need to change, and it starts young.”

https://vancouver.citynews.ca/2025/01/27/vancouver-school-board-motion-defibrillators/

  • A motion to install automated external defibrillators (AEDs) will be presented at a Vancouver School Board meeting on Monday night.
  • The motion includes a cost analysis and options for installation, maintenance, and training in the school district’s budget.

In November, a group of students at Vancouver’s Point Grey Secondary school led by Tobias Zhang, raised money to purchase AEDs for the school after his friend passed away from a cardiac arrest following a basketball tryout in 2022.

  • The motion says there is currently no act or regulation requiring mandatory AEDs in public spaces, including schools.

  • “Our government has more than doubled funding to school districts for inclusive supports and services since 2017, but I know barriers remain,” said [Education Minister Lisa] Beare.
  • “Humphreys said that many kids who are excluded do not yet have diagnoses — they are waiting for the psychological assessments necessary to receive a learning disability or neurodivergence diagnosis.”

https://thetyee.ca/News/2024/12/06/Teacher-Resignations-Rise-BC/

  • “…fewer B.C. teachers left the profession last year than in the 2021-22 school year…but those who did leave were more likely to be resigning, rather than retiring or finishing their contract positions.”
  • “…the number of teachers resigning from their positions has been steadily increasing over the past four years, up to a high of 647 teachers quitting in 2023-24.”
    • ‘The Tyee requested an interview with Education Minister Lisa Beare, but she was not made available.”
  • “But what we are hearing is, aside from retirements, an increase in educators leaving the profession around the five-, six-, seven-year mark. What we need to understand is, why?”

https://burnabybeacon.com/p/youth-work-in-trades-program-burnaby-2024

  • Most of the programs are Industry Training Authority (ITA) red-seal trades. Red-seal trades are governed by regulations under the Provincial and Territorial Apprenticeship Acts.
  • Students can also receive industry training for skilled trades needed in Burnaby that are not considered red-seal programs. Christofides gave examples of industry training programs such as film, graphics, robotics, tourism, fitness, sound recording, health sciences, and digital animation.
  • “Over the last five years, it has consistently grown from the 150 to the 180 range up to around 300 for this year,”
    • Nine students received the $1,000 grant last year.
  • One of the challenges faced by the school district is providing training at Burnaby schools, where space is limited. Some programs are based in community colleges or other educational institutes, such as the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT)

Not a “teacher story”, but one I want to highlight:

https://bc.ctvnews.ca/abbotsford-student-s-speech-about-accessibility-challenges-at-her-school-censored-by-administrators-1.6946123

As part of her Grade 12 art activism class, Lexis De Meyer was tasked with investigating accessibility challenges faced by people with disabilities in her community of Abbotsford.

But just hours before she was set to present her painting and artist statement, her teacher pulled her aside.

  • “(She) tells me she had to change my artist statement, or the administration wouldn’t let her hand out the books that contained the rest of everybody’s artist statements,” De Meyer recounted.
  • On Friday, the Abbotsford School District issued a news release. In it, Superintendent Sean Nosek said: “We are investigating the circumstances surrounding the censorship of Ms. De Meyer’s speech. We understand that this action may have silenced an important student voice and caused frustration.”

What we don’t fund, we police.

  • Ontario’s recent education budget announced a “back to basics” funding formula, which includes $30 million to install vape detectors and security upgrades — measures which will expand the surveillance of students in schools.
  • The province says the budget signals a huge investment in education, but the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives notes it cumulatively reflects funds for 4,900 fewer educators in classrooms.

2019 – 92
2022 – 172
2023 – 303

  • In its Enhancing Student Learning Report, the Peace River South School District in northeastern B.C. reveals 18 per cent of teaching positions in 2022-23 were filled by uncertified instructors.
    • Over the course of the year, there were 691 unfilled teacher absences.
      • It says that meant principals and substitute teachers, who are also not certified, had to take over the teaching in those classrooms.
  • The MOE is reducing processing times for teacher certification applications while adding 350 new seats since 2018 in teacher education programs throughout B.C.

ﻼF: For 2024 Winter applications, UBCV had 1231 applicants (for around 750 places) up 5% from last year.

  • These services will help people who have had their intimate images shared without their consent quickly access self-help tools to diagnose their legal issues, get information about their rights and connect to supports.

Unfortunately, this law does not seem to address AI-generated images, the law being (as always) one step behind the emerging technologies.
