What’s interesting about this piece is that it’s integrated within the architecture of the building. He was always working very closely with architects in creating his public artworks. … He actually created and sculpted all of these particular bricks for the mosaic himself. He assembled a team, which included his family, that was often quite involved in creating his works, as well as other friends. They created these bricks together. These are all uniquely touched by the artist and made to create this beautiful mosaic pattern.
With this particular piece, he was specifically looking at, he says, Islamic designs, and in particular, British brickwork designs.
